The CRISPR-Cas is an adaptive and heritable immune system that protects prokaryotes from virus infection. The system functions by recognizing and degrading nucleic acid sequences. The programmable nuclease activity of Cas proteins has made them excellent tools for efficient and precise alteration of genes and gene regulation in eukaryotes.

We study fundamental aspects of the process of CRISPR-Cas immunity, but also develop new applications of the system. In particular, we study the Type I CRISPR-Cas system, which uses Cas1 and Cas2 for adaptation, and the Cascade complex and Cas3 to detect and stop virus infection.
