- The goal with our research is to understand how the immune system is functioning. Especially we want to understand how the immune system can attack microbes and clear infections and at the same time avoiding reacting to self tissue. This tolerance is very important. If the tolerance is broken, which can happen in some individuals, an autoimmune disease can develop.

- To understand how autoimmunity is triggered we study rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune inflammatory disease of the joints. Our goal is to gain knowledge of the mechanisms that trigger this disease with the possibilities to find a cure. Specifically we study how B lymphocytes are regulated, how they can become self-reactive and start secreting antibodies against proteins of the host. We also investigate by which mechanisms these antibodies induce joint inflammation.
